Hispanic Influence in the U.S. Market

  • Hispanics, the largest ethnic minority in OR, WA, and the U.S., represents 16.3% of the U.S. population.
  • In Oregon, Hispanics are the largest ethnic minority representing 12% of the state's population. There are over 450,062 Hispanics in Oregon - which has grown 144% since 1990. 4
  • In Washington, Hispanics represent 11% (739,699) of the state's poplulation. 4
  • In the tri-county area the Hispanic population increased 140% from 161,831 to 226,575.
  • Since 1990 the number of Hispanic people in Multnomah county increased by 134% from 59,930 to 80,138.
  • Portland's 54,840 Hispanic residents represent 9.4% of the city's population – a 160% increase since 1990.
  • The buying power of Hispanics in the Portland metropolitan area represents over $7 billion per year. 4
  • Oregon is one of the top 10 fastest growing Latino populations in the U.S.
  • Today, there are over 1.5 million Hispanic-owned firms in the U.S. generating over $200 billion in sales. 2
  • The number of Hispanic firms in the U.S. increased over 76% between 1987 and 1992.
  • Oregon economy: the number of Latino-owned businesses increased 320% since 1992, from 3,538 to 11,339 firms which generated over $1.6 billion in revenues. 3
  • Washington's 17,810 Latino-owned businesses generated over $9.2 billion in revenues.
  • Between 1987 and 1996 the number of Hispanic women-owned businesses grew by 206%. As of 1996, there were 382,400 Hispanic women-owned businesses nationwide. 1
  • Hispanic Magazine lists Portland as one of the top ten cities for Hispanics quality of life.
